BAKER, LA (WAFB) - A Baker firefighter is in the hospital recovering from burns he received while fighting a massive house fire Saturday evening.
According to the Baker Fire Department, the fire started just before 5:30 p.m. at a house on Texas Avenue, just off Groom Road.
Howard Ward, department spokesman, said the fire spread quickly. By the time firefighters arrived on the scene, the home was fully engulfed. A mother and five children managed to escape the flames.
Ward said one of the firefighters was burned when his glove got caught on something and slipped off. He added the firefighter was alert at the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
Baton Rouge arson investigators are trying to determine the cause of the blaze.
"The mother mentioned she thinks it may have started in a rear bedroom on a mattress," Ward explained. "We don't know. We're trying to find out."
Ward said it appeared the fire started in a child's bedroom. He does not suspect criminal intent.
