As a viewer of our WAFB newscasts, you know that we constantly report on the state of education in Baton Rouge and Louisiana. The news isn't always good. Our schools struggle with a lack of funding, problems of truancy and the ongoing fight to keep the best students and teachers from leaving our area.

Today, we want to shift the focus from bad news to great news. Sherwood Middle Magnet is drawing national attention and is being used as a blueprint for schools around the nation. Out of the 300 schools chosen to receive the U.S. Department of Education's blue ribbon award, Sherwood Middlle is one of only six that are being looked at as guides for other schools.

Educational researchers praise Sherwood Middle for an atmosphere where teachers not only help students, but help each other. The result is a student body that excells in test scores and a school that is among the top 10 percent in the state.

Thank you to the educators and students of Sherwood Middle Magnet. Thank you for your hard work and thank you for giving us another reason to be proud of our Louisiana schools.
