BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Parents and grandparents across East Baton Rouge Parish lined up to sign up youngsters for Pre-K. Registration did not begin until Tuesday, but many who wanted to send children to Shenandoah Elementary slept in front of the school Monday night.
The people at the front of the line showed up as early as 2 p.m. One parent claimed there were only 18 spots available and students were being accepted on a first come, first serve basis.
"You got to be here early," said Barney Buller, a grandparent. "We've been here since 2:30 yesterday afternoon and there have been people here earlier than that."
By the time the doors opened, some people had waited almost 17 hours. Principal Carolyn Sauer said she understands the dedication parents have toward their children's education.
"We truly have dedicated parents who believe in public education and I'm very pleased with that," Sauer said.
