Deer causes chain-reaction crash

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Two people are hospitalized in critical condition after two separate accidents involving different deer occurred on the same road Tuesday afternoon in Baton Rouge.

Both crashes happened on Old Perkins Road. Three people were taken to the hospital after the first crash. No injuries were reported in the second, which was only a short time after the first.

According to Louisiana State Police, a car hit a deer after it ran into the road just before Highland. The car swerved into oncoming traffic and hit another vehicle head-on. Then, a third car slammed into the back of the second.

A little while later, another car hit a second deer. No further details on the crash were given.

"This isn't an area you'd expect to find deer at, and this is a perfect example of why seat belt use is so important," said Sgt. Markus Smith with Louisiana State Police.
