Jury convicts man of shooting officer after Katrina

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A jury has convicted a 27-year-old man of trying to kill a New Orleans police officer during a post-Hurricane Katrina shooting at a looted gasoline station.

Jamail Joyner faces up to 50 years in prison for attempted first-degree murder. The shooting left officer Kevin Thomas on the pavement with a gunshot wound to the skull. Another man, 47-year-old Vincent Walker, was acquitted Friday.

The officer agreed with the defense contention that Walker acted like a "peacemaker" after he and his partner approached four men at the station. State District Judge Terry Alarcon set sentencing for April 16.
