Officials declare state of emergency in Donaldsonville

DONALDSONVILLE, LA (WAFB) - The president of Ascension Parish declared a state of emergency for the west bank of the parish and schools in Donaldsonville were closed because of water supply problems in the area Tuesday.

Tommy Martinez said customers of Peoples Water Company in Donaldsonville were expected to be without water until late Tuesday night after a transformer failure at its pumping station. All Donaldsonville schools were closed as of 11:30 a.m. because of lack of water.

Donaldsonville has also been added to the boil water order, which was already in place for Modeste, McCall and Smoke Bend on the west bank, as well as the Darrow area on the east bank. Residents were also asked to conserve water to allow the system to recharge. The boil water order will remain in effect for the west bank and Darrow until further notice.

"We are asking our residents to be patient and to try to minimize the use of water," Mayor Leroy Sullivan said.

The EPA advises bringing water to a rolling boil for one minute and then letting it cool before drinking or storing it.

Water for Modeste, McCall and Smoke Bend is supplied by Assumption Parish, which has been experiencing problems with its water system due to the cold weather snap. Water to the affected areas in Darrow comes from St. James Parish.
