The start of a New Year should be a joyous time. A time for us to be with family and friends. Unfortunately, it's also a time when some celebrating goes to far. Whether it's a party at the office or a get together with friends, some of you will drink too much and then get behind the wheel of a car.

A national survey ranks Louisiana fifth in the nation in the number of DUI fatalities. This holiday season, promise yourself that you will play it safe. If you plan on drinking, pick a designated driver before the party starts. And if you are that driver, remember that you've promised to stay sober. Your life, and the lives of others depend on it.

If you choose to drink, there's another way you can get home safely. Mockler Budweiser has a safe ride home program. Just Call Yellow Cab at (926-6400) between 7 p.m. and 3 a.m. from any place in East Baton Rouge Parish and someone will pick you up and drive you home. And it won't cost you a penny.

Remember also that if you do drink and drive, police will be on the streets looking for you. We hope they find you. We know that will be costly and may even land you in jail. But that arrest could save your life and the lives of others.

We sincerely wish you and your family a safe and joyous New Year.
