BATON ROUGE, LA (AP) - A cadet training academy class to fill about 40 Louisiana state trooper positions has been postponed because of state budget cuts. State police say the class had been set to begin Feb. 29.
About 250 applicants successfully completed background checks and interviews for the class. Col. Mike Edmonson, the head of Louisiana State Police, said the academy students had not yet been selected. Edmonson hopes to have the class in late 2010 or early 2011.
The postponement is expected to save up to $700,000 during the current state fiscal year. Gov. Bobby Jindal has said the state will have to cut $248 million in spending to balance the budget for the current fiscal year.
