NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (WMC-TV) - "The Blind Side" follows a Memphis teen's journey from the projects to professional football stardom.
The Hollywood film based on the best-selling book tells the story of Michale Oher, a homeless African-American teen taken in by an affluent, white East Memphis family.
On the evening before the film's national release, its stars gathered in New Orleans for the world premiere.
Sandra Bullock says her latest film is uplifting.
"You get a sense of hope and excitement about life," she said.
Standing next to Leigh Anne Tuohy, the woman Bullock portrays in the film, Bullock said she originally declined the role.
"I passed judgment on this lady right here, and I didn't buy that people like this were true," she said. "I thought a lot of it had to be made up. Then I met the family and I went, 'wow.' I assumed a lot of things that were absolutely wrong."
Tuohy convinced her family to adopt Oher, who turned the kindness into college, and then millions as a first-round NFL draft pick.
Said Tuohy, "I hope everybody that comes to see "The Blind Side," when they leave the theatre, they'll just want to do something for somebody."
