It's that time of year again, where we celebrate and support the Baton Rouge Zoo. Here at WAFB, we have a special relationship with the zoo. Those of you who grew up in Baton Rouge may remember it was our own Buckskin Bill Black that started the push for a zoo. In 1965, taxpayers came together with the money to get it started and the rest is history.
Some 260,000 people visit our zoo each year and more than 50,000 area school children take part in educational programs. It has grown from simply a family attraction to a partner in important research projects. The Baton Rouge Zoo works with other zoos from around the country in developing international species survival plans. The zoo also works closely with the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine and has seen the births of several exotic animals.
