Today is a new beginning for the East Baton Rouge Parish School System. John Dilworth, an experienced and successful school superintendent in Montgomery, Alabama, takes over that same job today here in Baton Rouge.

Mr. Dilworth's selection to lead our public schools follows an intense, nationwide search. There are a lot of hopes and dreams riding on his success. The most important of those belong to our chidren.

Mr. Dilworth was well liked in his last job. After two years in Montgomery, the business community there offered him a substantial bonus if he would stay another three years. That speaks volumes.

In approaching his position here, Mr. Dilworth has talked about accountability. We believe that is key to moving our schools forward. Accountability can be difficult and sometimes bring controversy. We hope that he keeps his promise of accountability.

Mr. Dilworth also talks about improving relationships on multiple levels with area businesses, with the state department of education, and with parents. We wish the new superintendent much success in reaching those goals. The real winners in his success will be our children.
