River Pilots' Controversy

(Baton Rouge-AP) -- It's the latest chapter in the controversy over how much shipping interests should have to pay pilots who guide ships along Louisiana's sometimes treacherous waters.  A new filing with the state Public Service Commission shows that members of the Lake Charles Pilots Association - one of four pilot groups in Louisiana - each earned more than a half-million dollars in 2001.  Critics say such compensation is too high and are pushing for tighter regulation of the pilots' pay.  Pilots say the high pay is a result of high operating expenses.
