BATON ROUGE, La (WAFB) - An entire church family is trying to make sense of a bizarre killing on Goodwood Boulevard, right in front of Independence Park. Police detectives are hoping someone saw or heard something.

The shooting happened near the corner of the Independence Park on Goodwood near Lobdell Saturday night. Police say someone shot at a man several times in his car. The man was lost and trying to get to his hotel on Airline, so he could perform at his church Sunday morning.

Detectives aren't sure if this was something random, like the terrible end to a road rage incident. There are just a lot more questions than answers at this point.

39-year-old Brent Cole lived in Dequincy, Louisiana, which is just on the other side of Lake Charles. Cole was thinking about moving to Baton Rouge for a job. He played bass guitar every other Sunday at the First Pentecostal Church on Jones Creek.

Cole was on the phone with his wife, looking for directions, when he told her somebody was shooting at him while he was driving. A single shot hit Cole in the stomach and killed him. Surprisingly, the other bullet hit his bass guitar.

The pastor of Cole's Baton Rouge church says Cole was a prince of a man. "It grieves me that a life so precious can be snuffed out like this, so easily," says Pastor Dan Davis.

Police are not sure why anyone would shoot at Cole or why he would have been a target. They need your help. The shooting happened Saturday night just after 8:00. Call Crime Stoppers at 344-STOP, if you have any information.

The church has set up a fund for Cole's wife and two young boys. You can donate to the fund at the First Pentecostal Church on Jones Creek.
