Former LSU Football Player Dies in Motorcycle Crash

A player on LSU's 2003 championship football team was killed Tuesday in a motorcycle crash. He was 26-year-old Dave Peterson, Jr., who was in the contracting business. It happened just a block from Istrouma High School on Brady Street at North 38th Street.

Investigators from the police traffic-homicide unit say Peterson lost control of the 2007 Kawasaki he was riding, just as a local resident on Brady Street, driving a 1996 GMC Yukon, was pulling into his driveway.

Dave Peterson was wearing a helmet, but police investigators say he died at the scene from injuries to his head and neck. Peterson, who wore #57, was recruited to LSU from a Kansas junior college. He was not a starter, but played in seven games the 2003 championship season.

Dave Peterson owned the Kawasaki motorcycle in a partnership with personal injury lawyer Benjamin N. Gibson. Gibson quotes police as saying it looks like an unavoidable accident with neither party clearly at fault.

Peterson leave behind a two-year-old son and a wife who is 5 months pregnant.   A fund to help his family with expenses has been set up at Capital One Bank under the DAVE PETERSON, JR. FUND.
