New Online Course can Help Lower Car Insurance Rates

Did you know you could save hundreds of dollars on your car insurance without ever leaving home? Yes. All you have to do is take an online course, pass a test and take proof of those passing scores to your insurance agent. According to state police, troopers are pulling more and more people over for speeding, tailgating, driving impaired, and the big one is not wearing seatbelts. Police say defensive driving may be what drivers need. And now, you can save money doing it.

Many of you have probably seen quite a few cars speeding up to beat red lights. Monday afternoon, in only ten minutes, our cameras caught several cars breaking traffic laws. There was one instance where a light was green on one side, so the cars are ready to go, but couldn't before yielding to a silver sports utility vehicle that hit the gas to beat its red light. Then on South Foster, a silver car runs a red light just to make it across. Sergeant Markus Smith with Louisiana State Police says what most Louisiana drivers need is a traffic refresher course. Sgt. Smith says, "These classes are designed to teach drivers about laws, many of which a lot of people are not aware of. Without these classes, a lot of drivers don't take the time to learn traffic laws."

That's because many dread sitting in a classroom, or just don't want to spend the time it would take to do it. Rodrigues Hendricks says, "I am so busy and it's the way I work, it's just a lot of time, it's just time consuming." Now you can take the class, the test and get a certificate without ever leaving home. And, the entire process just takes an hour. If you're interested, go to www.drivesafela.org, register, and take the course. Then when you're ready, take the test. It's 25 multiple choice questions. You'll have to get at least 20 of them right to pass. If you do, you'll be able to print out a certificate of completion. Just take that to your insurance agent for your discount. The new tool already has quite a few people convinced. Octavia Sterling says, "You can take defensive driving online. Oh! I didn't know that." Cheryl Mercedes says, "Sounds like you'd be interested." Sterling says, "Yes, I would." Carol Miller says, "Oh, I sure would, if you save on insurance."

Even Hendricks is changing his tune. He says, "An hour start to finish? Maybe I would." And if you'd like to see what all the talk is about, you can actually take a demo test before without paying a dime. But, if you actually do decide to take the course, it'll cost you $39.99.
