Career Academy put on lockdown after massive fight

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

According to Baton Rouge Police and witnesses on the scene, a large fight broke out at Career Academy around 11:30 today.

A parent told WAFB that the fight started in the cafeteria of the school. She says there are students that are 19- and 20-years-old going to the school, and she believes they are the ones who started the fight.

Baton Rouge Police say the school was having a fall fest activity and students were getting out of control and began throwing drinks at each other. That is when multiple fights broke out.

The Career Academy, on East Brookstown Drive, is a tuition-free charter high school. A spokeswoman from the school says "[The fight] was almost immediately broken up.  We had more police here than we ever needed. There were no arrests, no blood, no weapons." She also says the fight involved 15 or 20 kids.

"There's no reason for anyone to be concerned about sending their children back to school. We are ensuing an investigation at this time over the students that were involved. There were disciplinary measures. Some students may actually be expelled," said Principal Melissa Bergeron.

"Since we're in an age of technology and we are in a high school, almost all of our students have technology devices and they start communicating with their parents. The unfortunate thing is the message sometimes gets delivered in an inconsistent manner," said Bergeron.

Both Baton Rouge Police Department and the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office is on the scene and officials say they had to use pepper spray on the most aggressive students to break up the fight.

"Instead of parents rushing in, they locked the school down to get the situation under control," said Cpl. Don Coppola with BRPD. "A food fight initially caused this whole incident. [The officer at the school] called for back-up and several units arrived to assist him. In attempts to disperse the students pepper spray was sprayed which was very effective."

The incident is still under investigation and charges are pending.
