BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Louisiana state Sen. Troy Hebert was named the new commissioner for the Alcohol and Tobacco Control Board.

Col. Mike Edmonson, superintendent of the Louisiana State Police, appointed Hebert on Thursday. His tenure is effective immediately.

"After serving nearly 20 years in elected office, I'm looking forward to this new chapter in my life," Hebert said in a news release. "The office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control is a critical regulatory agency and it is important that we are receptive to consumers and industry. I'm honored the governor's appointment will allow me to continue serving my great state and I'm ready to get to work right away."

A Jindal administration official confirmed Wednesday the move would happen. Hebert replaces Murphy Painter, the former commissioner who resigned in August.

Painter stepped down after a former employee accused him of stalking her and using a state database to view thousands of people's personal information. Painter's case is pending in court.
