Troopers: Rig driver may be at fault in crash

Posted: Updated:

RAMAH, LA (WAFB) - Investigators said the driver of an 18-wheeler that overturned on Interstate 10 Thursday, causing the roadway to shut down for about 12 hours, may be to blame for the crash.

According to Louisiana State Police, the driver was not paying close attention to what was happening when he approached a traffic slowdown on I-10 West near the Ramah/Maringouin exit.

Troopers said traffic came to a sudden stop and to avoid rear-ending the car in front of him, the driver of the tractor trailer swerved and veered off the road.

They said the truck rolled into the grass and flipped.

The driver was not injured.

The investigation is ongoing, but authorities said the big rig driver will likely be charged.

The tanker leaked sodium hydroxide, which is also known as lye.

The interstate was closed off in both directions while a hazardous materials crew worked to contain the leak.
