Police unit overturns in 3-car crash

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Three people, including a Baton Rouge police officer, are recovering in a hospital after a three-car crash Wednesday evening left the officer's cruiser upside down in the middle of the road.

According to the Baton Rouge Police Department, the injured officer was taken to the hospital. A spokesman for the department said the officer was shaken, but appeared to be okay. His injuries are not considered life-threatening.

The wreck happened at the intersection of Prescott Road and Foster Drive, which is in North Baton Rouge, around 7:45 p.m.

Cpl. L'Jean McKneely with BRPD said the on-duty officer was headed west down Prescott when his car collided with a Dodge Stratus going south on Foster. The officer's cruiser flipped several times before ending up on its roof.

A news release by the department indicated the officer had his emergency lights on and was responding to an accident when this crash occurred. Witnesses at the scene said he was driving fast and also stated his flashing lights were on.

Witnesses said the Dodge caught fire after the crash, but was quickly put out. They claimed the woman driving the car was taken to the hospital. Police confirmed the driver was transported, but gave no further details about the person. Witnesses added she had a passenger with her, but he stayed at the scene.

Investigators said a Honda Accord was also involved in the crash. They reported the driver was taken to the hospital as well, but no other information about the person or the car was released.

No names were given and their exact conditions and injuries are unknown.

No charges have been filed.

The crash is still under investigation.
