AMITE, LA (WAFB) - After spending 12 years searching for a killer, investigators have made an arrest in connection with a deadly shooting and the suspect is actually the victim's son.

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office reported Eugene Prava Jr., 39, was officially charged Wednesday with second-degree murder in the death of his father, Eugene Sr.

"Gene" Pravata, 52, was shot with a shotgun under the carport of his Tickfaw home on Nov. 28, 1998.

He died during surgery later that evening.

Detectives said they suspected Eugene Jr. from early on in the investigation, but they did not have the proof they needed to charge him.

Deputies said that changed when a detective was able to connect the son to the shooting through evidence he gathered during the ongoing investigation.

"Cases like these are never forgotten," said Sheriff Daniel Edwards. "It is only through hard work, diligence and dedication that we are able to finally put a case such as this to rest."

Eugene Pravata Jr. has an extensive criminal record.

He was in the Tangipahoa Parish jail on a parole violation when he was charged with his father's murder.
