Report: NJ area's light rail ridership rose in '08

Posted: Updated:

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - An environmental group says the Hudson Bergen Light Rail is saving commuters millions of gallons of gasoline.

A report released by Environment New Jersey this week says ridership on the northern New Jersey rail line increased more than 13 percent to nearly 16 million riders in 2008.

In contrast, national light rail ridership increased about 8 percent nationally during the same period.

The report says use of the Hudson Bergen line saved commuters 3.4 million gallons of gasoline last year. That's about how much fuel 6,000 cars use in a year.

Proponents of extending the line from North Bergen to Tenafly say the report shows why it's a good idea.
