East Baton Rouge Parish bond proposal fails

Posted: Updated:

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - With 100% of the precincts reporting in East Baton Rouge Parish, the $901 million bond proposal by Mayor-President Kip Holden has failed.

The complete unofficial returns showed only 36 percent of voters favored the tax, while 64 percent were against.

Dwight Hudson, president of the Baton Rouge Tea Party, expressed satisfaction in the results. The group said it is not in favor of any more taxes and government should not be running a business, referring to the "Alive" project. Other Baton Rouge Tea Party members also commented on the plan.

"I think it's a terrible time to try to raise taxes," said Woody Jenkins. "We really have a great protest against high taxes and more debt. People really don't want to see more taxes and this particular plan was poorly conceived."

"The majority of this, I think it's something we need to do, but with 'Alive,' I couldn't vote for 'Alive,'" said Clifford Grout.

The Office of the Louisiana Secretary of State reports voter turnout in East Baton Rouge Parish was 26.3 percent for this election.
