BR-area ceremonies honor veterans

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Americans everywhere took some time Wednesday to honor military veterans in observance of Veterans Day.

Congressman Bill Cassidy attended the USS Kidd Memorial's Veterans Day Ceremony and delivered remarks in honor of veterans, especially those from the Baton Rouge area. The event was held at the Old State Capitol at 11 a.m.

Schools and organizations around the East Baton Rouge Parish School System recognized Veterans Day in various ways. The JROTC cadets from Tara and Broadmoor high schools participated in an event at Parkview Baptist Church. Also, Riveroaks Elementary on Fountainbleau Drive hosted a Veterans Day banquet on behalf of veterans who know students at the school.

Gonzales held a Veterans Day celebration at Veterans Memorial Park. Retired US Army 1st Sgt. Herman Deculas, a Vietnam War veteran, served as the guest speaker. A choir made up of students from East Ascension, Dutchtown and St. Amant high schools sang patriotic music.

Ascension Parish President Tommy Martinez met with two dozen parish employees who are veterans of the various branches of the military Monday to thank them for their service. They all got together at St. Amant Recreational Park for a luncheon.

In New Orleans, the National World War II Museum hosted a special ceremony dedicated to the French-American friendship. It included a presentation of the Normandy Liberty Bell to the museum by the French people. The French Legion of Honor was also bestowed upon five Louisiana veterans.

In Washington, DC, President Barack Obama saluted the troops on Veterans Day by hosting a special breakfast at the White House. He also attended a wreath-laying at Arlington National Cemetery.

At a memorial for the 13 shooting victims at Fort Hood Tuesday, he said American veterans well know the meaning of the word "sacrifice."
