Lieutenant General Russel HonoréBy David Spunt - email
KILLEEN, TX (WAFB) - Just one day after a massive shooting rampage left 13 dead at Fort Hood, retired Army Lieutenant General Russel Honoré is on the ground, helping to get things under control. Honoré is no stranger to handling a crisis. With his brash style and leadership ability, the retired general is doing what he does best, helping to get things under control.
"The part of the installation I am seeing right now seems everything is back to normal and people are going about their business of doing what they got to do," he said.
Honoré gained notoriety helping to calm the chaos on the streets of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. He retired from the Army in 2008, but still travels to help out during crises.
"The classic quote of him of course is from the mayor of New Orleans when he called him that John Wayne dude. That is actually what he looked like going into New Orleans with the 82nd Airborne," said retired Brigadier General Arthur Abercrombie with the Louisiana National Guard.
After Thursday's deadly shootings at Fort Hood, Honoré got on a plane to Texas to do what he could. He arrived to meet with Army leaders and help in the relief efforts.
"(I wanted) to be here as opposed to being in a studio somewhere making commentary. (I can) talk to people I know here helps give some degree of confidence to Army families around the country," he said.
Honoré admits it will be tough to road forward, but is confident the Army and America will recover, and grow stronger for the future.
"We recovered from D-Day when we lost 9,000 casualties, we'll recover from this," he said.
