School closes after escapee's gear found

Posted: Updated:

ANGOLA, LA (WAFB) - A spokesperson with the Louisiana State Penitentiary said an elementary school in West Feliciana Parish will be temporarily closed after search crews found signs an escaped inmate may have been in the area.

Search crews found rain gear believed to have belonged to Henry Smith, the escaped convict, about five miles from the entrance to Tunica Elementary School.

Students will be transferred to Bains Elementary School in St. Francisville.

Warden Burl Cain said a little kid claimed he saw Smith running through his yard Sunday.

Agents found Smith's raincoat in the same area.

Angola Prison officials said Crime Stoppers was offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to Smith's whereabouts.

The Angola search team believed it may be closing in on the convicted killer.

Smith went missing around 11 a.m. Thursday morning while on work-duty at the prison.
