Efforts stepped up to find escaped murderer

Posted: Updated:

ANGOLA, LA (WAFB) - The search for the convicted murderer who escaped from Angola continued Friday morning.

Officials said they now have over 200 armed agents looking around the clock for Henry Smith, 44.

The agents are searching the Tunica Hills, a densely wooded, rugged terrain along Highway 66, which is the main route in and of Angola.

Officials said they expect the rainy forecast to help them in their efforts to follow the tracks being left by Smith.

All visiting at the prison was suspended until further notice.

Tunica Elementary School, which is about five miles away from Angola, was put on lockdown Thursday afternoon.

Smith's work vest was found near the school.

Smith killed a man in 1980 during an armed robbery in Jefferson Parish.

Deputies said he is violent and they don't know if he is armed.

People in the area were warned to stay inside their homes.

If you have any information that can lead to Henry Smith's capture, call Crime Stoppers at 225-344-7867.
