GONZALES, LA (WAFB) - A man wanted for questioning in the shooting deaths of his pregnant ex-girlfriend and her brother in Baton Rouge Friday morning was found hiding out in a boat shed in Gonzales Friday afternoon.
Police say the shooting happened Friday morning around 4:30 a.m. on Syble Drive just off Monterrey Drive, east of Cortana Mall. Tanya Smith, 31, her unborn child, and Smith's brother, Renea Boreaux, 15, were all killed in the attack. Police say bullets riddled Baton Rouge their home.
The search for Percy Cage, Smith's ex-boyfriend, ended in Gonzales, 20 miles away from Baton Rouge. Multiple law enforcement agencies were involved in the manhunt, which caused quite a scare in the area. Audrey Favorite lives on Marchand Street in Gonzales.
She describes the block as quiet, but the serenity of the place she calls home was rudely interrupted Friday afternoon when Cage used her neighborhood as his hideout. Gonzales Primary School was put on lockdown for about an hour as police searched for him. "All of this killing is non-sense," said Favorite.
Also foolish, detectives say, was Cage's hideout spot. After a chase, he ended up in a boat shed on Pleasant Street in Gonzales. "He was in the rafters," said Detective Steve Nethkin with the Gonzales Police Department. "He concealed himself very well. He was hot and sweaty."
"I'm just glad it's over and we are back to normal," said Favorite. Things may be back to normal in her neighborhood, but they'll never be the same for Smith's family or the two-year-old son she left behind.
Police searched the homes in Gonzales where Cage was believed to be hiding out. They are not revealing what if anything was found. Cage was arrested back in 2008 for beating up a woman. In July, police say cage beat up Smith. He was booked on simple battery and aggravated assault charges.
The family has set up an account at Hancock Bank in the names of Tonya Smith and Renea Voreaux to receive donations to help pay for funeral expenses.
