People with outstanding warrants rounded up

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - As part of a summer initiative that has already landed nearly 100 people behind bars, local law enforcement officers are cracking down on people named in outstanding warrants.  

Tuesday, dozens more were arrested on charges ranging from armed robbery to battery and theft. Some people simply had traffic warrants. Deputies say on average, each person arrested had three outstanding warrants.

FBI agents, East Baton Rouge Parish sheriff's deputies, state troopers, and U.S. marshals appeared to be all over the Gardere area. A total of 40 people were handcuffed and hauled off to jail. Jeremy Blackburn was wanted for armed robbery. Deputies say they had been looking for him for some time.

There were also a few checkpoints set up that ruffled a few feathers, but deputies say it's all an effort to make the streets safer. "We have good people that live in this area," said Col. Bobby Dale Callender with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office. "You're going to have a select few that we have to come in and help them with. We're not going to let them take over our neighborhoods."

Law enforcement agencies plan to hit several other areas this summer. They are asking people to go ahead and turn themselves in if they have any outstanding warrants.
