BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - As thousands gathered at the Staples Center in Los Angeles to remember the "King of Pop," millions more watched the ceremony on television, including many in the Baton Rouge area who remembered Michael Jackson as an artist they say touched every generation.
He produced vinyl records, CDs galore, and hit after hit. Michael Jackson had it all, success and controversy. But no matter where you stood, most agree that Jackson was a musical genius. "It's definitely watching history, because like I said, he covered every decade 70s, 80s, 90s, and almost all of 2000," said Noel Jackson. He and his brother co-own the Music Treasure Chest.
While things were business as usual at the store, by noon, Noel and his brother had their attention on the television. They watched as the world honored the boy they listened to as kids. "Just to hear a little boy singing that kind of stuff give you chills man. He never lost that edge to what people liked to hear."
Across town at Webb's Barbershop, every chair was taken, with customers watching the nationwide memorial service. "Hee-hee," sang Lionell Decquir. He wasn't just the man in the mirror, he was also a huge fan. He says he remembers when his parents introduced him to the Jackson 5. By the time Jackson went solo, Lionell was hooked. "Just a thriller," he sang. "His moves, his intensity, his just him, Mike. His energy."
Whoever you ask, musically, Michael Jackson was one of a kind.
