BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A three-year-old girl died at a Baton Rouge day care facility Wednesday.
Damiyn McElveen was found dead inside the van at Wanda's Kids World in the afternoon. Investigators believe McElvee was accidentally left inside the van after being picked up from home that morning.
McElveen's body was discovered as workers got in the van around 3:00 in the afternoon to begin bringing kids back home, police said. "There's a process in place to bring those children here and take attendance and account for them when they are brought inside," said Sgt. Don Kelly with the Baton Rouge Police Department.
Comeshia Wilson lives just a few doors down from Wanda's and she was planning to send her child there next month. "When you pick the kids up, you are supposed to count them as they get on and the last person off the van should count them as they (the children) get off the van," Wilson said.
Police say the drivers of the van were taken downtown for questioning, but there's no word on what was said in those conversations. The temperature in Baton Rouge at 3:00pm Wednesday was 98 degrees. The facility is located on Brady Street, between Acadian Thruway and Plank Road.
