24-year-old shot dead in Baker

BAKER, LA (WAFB) - Police in Baker are investigating a shooting in Baker early Tuesday morning that left one man dead.

Any murder can destroy a family, but when one happens in a small town, it clips away at the quiet convenience folks had come to expect.

Gunshots ruptured the flow of the peaceful quiet morning, jarring a woman inside her home on Johnston Street. When she looked outside to see what was going on, her eyes connected with a man lying in her yard.

She didn't recognize him. Police later identified him as 24-year-old Jeremiah Gibson. He was known as "Meko." The young man was moaning and close to death. She went back inside to call emergency services, but the man reportedly collapsed and died before they arrived.

Next door, neighbors were still trying to put it all together. "When I walked out, I at first thought somebody was playing, then I saw the holes in him and I was like, 'Oh, Lord,'" said Tony Johnson.

This is perhaps a very unwanted wake up call for the neighborhood. Johnson has lived in there all of his life, some 50 years. In fact, his father and his father's father lived there, too. They really only had to worry about the occasional youngster and his booming car.

He was clearly shaken by what had transpired. "To have something like this, it's unbelievable," he said. "It's hard to believe that this actually happened."

Police are looking for additional tips from the public about what happened. Anyone with information or can help police find Gibson's killer is asked to call Baker police at 775-6000.

They have not released any information about a motive or any potential suspects.
