Metairie man killed by train near Donaldsonville

DONALDSONVILLE, LA (WAFB) - The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office says a man believed to have been in a traffic accident near Donaldsonville apparently walked onto some railroad tracks, was hit by a train, and died early Wednesday morning.

On their way to the scene, deputies saw a black Hummer in a ditch on La. Hwy 1. They say it looked like it had been heading toward White Castle when it crossed the opposing lane, ran off the road, and ended up on its side in the ditch. They say no one was inside the SUV or around it.

The man killed by the train has been identified as 32-year-old Michael Young of Metairie. Investigators think he was also the person driving the Hummer. The distance from where the vehicle was found to where the train accident happened is less than a mile. They think he began walking toward White Castle after going in the ditch. Deputies say they were told his mother lives there.

The train's conductor told deputies he saw Young sitting on the tracks and began blowing the horn, but Young did not respond. They say the train could not be stopped in time to avoid the accident. Deputies also say the Hummer belonged to Young's employer. They don't expect any charges to be filed.
