WHITE CASTLE, LA (WAFB) - An expensive African Grey Parrot is back home after escaping a Gustav-damaged cage in White Castle.

Its owner, who's a speech therapist, taught "Jo-Jo" two languages and uses her to help stroke patients speak.

Jo-Jo is five years old and speaks English and Spanish. Her owner, Kathy Hendrick, was distraught as she tried to coax Jo-Jo back to her cage. She used Jo-Jo's brother as bait. "My patients would sure miss him, so would I," Hendrick said prior to the bird's return.

After being free for two days, Jo-Jo was spotted a few blocks from her home. Neighborhood volunteers tried to nab her. "And I'll tell you what; LSU didn't help me, fire department wouldn't help me, animal control wouldn't help me, police department, my neighbors wouldn't help me, but these precious people came out of their homes for nothing to help me," Hendrick said.

Hendrick says a man in an orange vest returned Jo-Jo to her just before 6:00 Wednesday evening. She says her only regret is that she didn't get his name and does want to thank him.
