LAFAYETTE, LA (WAFB) - It's hard to believe in this day and age, but gas was selling Monday for 99 cents a gallon. You had to go to Lafayette to find it, and you better believe that drivers found it.

There was a non-stop parade of cars on Johnston Street in Lafayette, where people lined up for something well worth the wait. "I been here since 5:30 a.m. $40 worth of gas to burn 10. I believe I'll take it," says Delbert Ardweh. Drivers came from all over the city and braved the blistering heat to buy $10 worth of gas for just 99 cents a gallon. It was a deal so good that even the folks who work at the gas station couldn't pass it up. "A couple of days ago one of my employees who was at a local gas station and the owner said, ‘I'm gonna be down there to buy gas for 99 cents a gallon.' He knows what a good deal is you know," says Bob Giles, the owner of Giles Nissan.

It's almost unheard of these days to find cheap gas anywhere, but at a Giles dealership, drivers struck gold. "Oh goodness, almost full, almost full. This is fantastic," says Kathy Barrett. Bob Giles, who owns the dealership, got out in the heat and pumped some gas himself. He says it's time for businesses to give the community a well-deserved a break from the pain at the pump. "We've always done things like this to try and give back to the community. Community's been great to us and we think it's important for businesses to give back," he says.

One SUV driver told us he'll take any help he can get to fill up his gas-guzzling monster. "It's a gas guzzler, big Chevy Suburban. So, every little bit helps," says Neil McPherson. The gas supply came from the dealership's 12,000 gallon on-site tank. The owner of the dealership says all proceeds from gas sales will go to Acadian Outreach Center and they'll be out there 'til 11:00 p.m.
