BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Surveillance tape from an October 2007 nightclub brawl involving LSU football players and nightclub bouncers was released to WAFB 9NEWS Wednesday, after a request filed under the Freedom of Information Act. Police agreed to release the tape since there are no longer any pending criminal cases related to the fight.
The grainy and blurry video is what police and prosecutors reviewed as part of their probe into the fight at the Varsity nightclub near the north gates of LSU. Several people are seen being punched and hitting the ground, but it's all but impossible to figure out who they are, based on the videotape.
According to a police report, LSU's quarterback at the time, Ryan Perrilloux told an officer the fight started after he and his girlfriend were harassed by the security staff at the Varsity because of the "color of their skin." The fight led LSU Head Football Coach Les Miles to temporarily suspend Perrilloux and LSU linebacker Derrick Odom. The coach later announced Odom and walk-on football player Jeremy Benton had been thrown off the team, because of the fight.
Perrilloux returned to the team one week later but was kicked off the team earlier this year for un-related reasons. Odom was the only player to face criminal charges. Investigators have said the video shows Odom and several others returning to the Varsity shortly after the fight. That is when Odom allegedly smashed out a car window. Several people who appeared to have their faces covered are then seen running from the nightclub. The video obtained by WAFB 9NEWS does not appear to clearly show any vehicle being damaged.
Odom was charged with simple property damage but that charge was dismissed last week after the owner of the damaged vehicle failed to show up in court. Odom is now a junior at the University of Memphis and is on the football roster there. Perrilloux is now at Jacksonville State in Alabama.
