Congressman Richard Baker May Take Job

Posted: Updated:

A long-time Louisiana congressman is being courted to become a lobbyist, and already a state legislator says he would run for that U.S. House seat.

Congressman Richard Baker tells 9NEWS he has filed paperwork with the House clerk's office, announcing his intentions to speak with Managed Funds Association.

Baker says a new law requires him to file that paperwork before he even meets with another business.

He says a representative from MFA told him he is the top candidate to be its new chief executive officer. Baker says those meetings will begin Monday.

Baker says he has not yet decided whether or not he will take the job. Baker says if he does not go to work for MFA, he would run for re-election in November. Including his time in the state legislature, Baker has served 37 years in public office.

Already, two people are coming forward saying they would run for Baker's seat if he does not seek re-election. They are Democratic State Representative Don Cazayoux of New Roads and former Baker staffer, Republican Paul Sawyer.
