N.O. Man Says He Plans to Spend Millions on Downtown BR

A new face swept into town Thursday with talk of big dreams for downtown Baton Rouge.

But, some of the claims he made about doing business in Baton Rouge are causing steam to rise from the mayor's office.

John Ramirez says he wants to spend up to $38 million to buy the old Commerce Building at Third and Laurel and turn the place into apartments, shops, and night clubs.

Ramirez claimed his plans were moving slowly because of excessive red tape on the part of the city of Baton Rouge.

But, city leaders say they've never heard of this guy until Thursday, and that he's not applied for any permits that they know of.

Ramirez told us his family owns up to 50 restaurants and clubs in New Orleans, but would not provide WAFB 9NEWS with the names of those businesses.
