January 29, 2004 - "Coffee Call"

For nearly 30 years folks have made their way here for coffee and beignets. If ever there was a tradition, "Coffee Call" on College Drive is it. -- Baton Rouge's very first coffee house, and its regulars would say the city's finest.

It's a second home, a place with an unstudied -- sort of "it just came out that way" kind of atmosphere. It was a charm too good to last. Coffee Call is being torn down to make way for the new Wal-Mart.

Coffee Call owner John Cannatella says, "I've been here all my life. They're kind of tearing the place down all around me, and it's bringing up some emotions. It really is, and it's going to be tough to see this place go."

Coffee Call's very first customer back in 1976 plans to be one of its last. -- "I have a wife at home. This is my mistress. You can come here. You can socialize. You can feel at ease. It's quite an institution," said Wes Constantin.

Last rites are Saturday. "From 8:00-9:00 customers are going to get up and say what Coffee Call has meant to them over the years. At 9:00 we're going to have a jazz band do a second line procession," said Cannatella.

A procession across the parking lot to the brand new Coffee Call. This of course is Louisiana, where we just don't let go of a good thing that easy.
