Louisiana to start an online K-12 school

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

This school year isn't over, but already some parents are signing their young scholars up for alternative instruction. The state's newest school has space for up to 500 students, and it's not your traditional way to teach.

The Louisiana Connections Academy is a public online school and a first for the state. While the majority of students will continue attending the traditional school in August, others will stare at a computer screen for their schooling.

"Everything is the same as any other public school. The difference being the way they receive the lessons," said Wade Henderson, a board member for the virtual school.

Tuesday, parents and students got an online tutorial about the Connections Academy. Debbie Fortune says the school sounded like a good idea for her four children, who are now home-schooled. Fortune says she took her children out of public school more than a year ago, because of bullying and standardized testing.

"You have all the iLEAP tests, the Graduate Exit Exam. Everything you do in a standard Louisiana public school, you still have all those same requirements," said Henderson.

Henderson adds, students from all over the state will attend. Between 20 to 30 teachers will be in Baton Rouge. Teachers will interact with students online and by phone.

Henderson says traditional schools don't allow some students the one on one attention they need. But this online academy will. Henderson also admits this type of school wouldn't be a good fit for a lot of students.

Fortune says what attracted her is that the program is geared more to public school.

Henderson adds the biggest difference is students can plan their virtual school day around their home life.

Once students are accepted in the online school, they will be send a computer loaded with grade appropriate software, textbooks and whatever else they might need to complete assignments.

Enrollment is open through May. The school year will begin in August and end in May.
