BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Many people want to know how two Louisiana prisoners escaped custody while on work detail and sources believe missed checkpoints were to blame.

Sources close to the investigation said mandatory checkpoints at Louisiana State Police headquarters were missed.

"They are supposed to be accounted for every 50 minutes," said Col. Mike Edmonson, superintendent of Louisiana State Police. "Why weren't they? When you don't see someone, it needs to be reported. Why wasn't it?"

The two suspects were working at the headquarters when they ran away and stole a state government van.

Darian "Drake" Pierce and Ricky Wedgeworth prompted a nationwide manhunt through four states, allegedly carjacking and killing David Cupps in Vicksburg, MS.

His body was later found at an Alabama hotel.

Pierce and Wedgeworth are facing murder charges and remain in a federal prison in Tennessee.

Edmonson added he is in the middle of an administrative investigation to find out whom or what is specifically to blame for the escape.
