BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Friends of a Southern University student and Baton Rouge rapper who was found dead inside of her Baton Rouge home over the weekend are commenting on the type of person she was.

The body of Sheena Barnett, 26, was discovered in her bed after a fire at her home Saturday afternoon on GSRI Avenue.

Those who knew Barnett, who is also known as "Sheen Marie," said she was focused and passionate about her music.

They simply can't believe not only that she's gone but the way in which she died.

"Young Ready," a Baton Rouge rapper, said he has known Barnett for several years and she did not deserve this.

"This kind of stuff happens every day in Baton Rouge," he claimed. "But to see something happen to somebody who is not in that kind of lifestyle, that's where the shock comes in."

"She's good people," said Thomas Garner. "You never expect anyone to do something like that to somebody like her."

"She was really dedicated to her music," added 'Young Ready.'

Barnett was found badly beaten and partially burned inside her home in the Gardere area.

Investigators reported whoever killed her tried to cover up the crime by setting the place on fire.

"It didn't cover up the fact that there was an intentional murder that took place," said Lawrence McLeary with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office.

He added it does not appear as if there was a struggle or that a robbery took place at her home over the weekend.

"It doesn't seem that someone broke in on her. It seems whoever was in there with her, either she let them in, or they came in with her," McLeary explained.

Barnett's exact cause of death has not yet been released. However, detectives said it appears she was beaten to death.
