BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The man charged in September's Beauregard Town murder has pleaded not guilty to the crime.
Aramis Jackson has been formally charged by the district attorney with killing Alexandra Engler and shooting her 9-year-old daughter Ariana multiple times.
Ariana is living out-of-state right now. She is said to be recovering slowly. Her grandmother, Bonnie Hunt, was in court for the arraignment. She says she needed to be here.
"This is the first time I have specifically and it just felt like it was something I needed to do," said Hunt. "I need to follow up on the case as the D.A. presents it and that's what I'm here to do."
Defense attorney Nelvil Hollingsworth enrolled today, although he has been on the case for a while.
"That's the reason for filing my initial discovery motions," said Hollingsworth. "We'll see what comes in on that and then I'll make a determination of where I want to go with experts and my review and plans. I'll be starting my own investigation into the case as well."
Bonnie Hunt will be accepting her daughter's graduation diploma from the medical college she was studying at the time of her death.
