BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - After spending more than two weeks in the hospital, the man who was shot while helping a pregnant woman being robbed has been released and now a blood drive is planned to replenish the supply used to save his life.

The Our Lady of the Lake Blood Donor Center will host the replacement drive Saturday in the name of Charlie Cangelosi. The event is open to the public and will be held from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the University Lab School. Everyone is encouraged to go out and give back to help someone who risked his life for a complete stranger.

Cangelosi is also sending a message to everyone who has been praying for him since the shooting. He left it on the Caring Bridge website.

"I want to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers," he wrote. "I know without them my family and I would not have been able to get through this. I feel very blessed to have so many people out there praying for me."

Cangelosi was shot on Nov. 7 after LSU beat Alabama. It happened on Earl Gros Avenue in the Tigerland neighborhood near LSU.

According to the family's Caring Bridge journal, Cangelosi and his family brought Thanksgiving dinner to the doctors and nurses who took care of him after the shooting.
