BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A "Good Samaritan" was shot while trying to help a woman being robbed at gunpoint in Tigerland near LSU early Sunday morning.

Friends identified the victim as Charlie Cangelosi, 23, of Baon Rouge. He was listed in critical condition Sunday afternoon.

According to the Baton Rouge Police Department, the shooting happened outside the Stadium Square apartment complex in the 4700 block of Earl Gros Avenue just after midnight.

Investigators said Cangelosi heard a woman screaming and ran to help her. Cangelosi found the woman being robbed at gunpoint by an unidentified black man, detectives said. When he tried to intervene, Cangelosi was shot in his chest. Police received the call at 12:12 a.m.

The unidentified shooter fled the scene in a car and remains at large. Police have not released the name of the 20-year-old woman who was being robbed. She was not injured. Neighbors expressed shock over the shooting.

"We were all horrified with the whole situation when we learned this morning, and Charlie was a great kid," said Laurie Thigpin, who lives near Tigerland. "He was doing exactly what we've all taught our children to do. He was going to the help of a young lady."

"This is just a close-knit neighborhood and all, and he's a great kid," said Patty Mauldin, another neighbor. "We know his parents real well and we were really surprised to hear this news. We're all just hoping and praying that he will recover."

Cangelosi is a 2009 graduate of LSU. His father, David Cangelosi, owns Cangelosi Ward General Contractors on Brookline Avenue in Baton Rouge.

Friends of the victim posted multiple notes of encouragement on his Facebook page Sunday afternoon.

"Praying for you," one message read. "Hang in there Charlie, we are all praying for you," another message said.
