BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Students that need help with their schoolwork have a new resource to help them.
Like a lot of seventh graders, Brooke Morgan needs help with her math homework.
"I get confused with changing the denominator," said Morgan. Unlike many kids, she has someone at home who knows their stuff. "My mom used to be a math teacher," she explained. "Right now, she's helping me figure out how I get the denominator."
For other students, online tutors are available from homeworkla.org, a new web-based homework help line. Kids from Kindergarten all the way through high school can log in for help with anything from English to math to science.
Sarah McDempsey is working online with a tutor about a chemistry problem. She can ask questions and get instant answers through a chat screen or write out equations longhand on another screen with her mouse. The tutor on the other end of the line can ask questions and prompt her until Sarah figures out the answer for herself, without the stress that can come with asking Mom or Dad for help. "Last time, I figured out two questions, two whole equations," said McDempsey.
The tutors are tested, screened, trained and paid by tutors.com.
Funding for the program comes from the 2010 stimulus package.
