Qualifying for fall elections begins

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Qualifying for the upcoming fall elections began Wednesday morning in Baton Rouge.

Candidates seeking the seats for U.S. Senate, lieutenant governor, secretary of state and others will file into the Office of the Louisiana Secretary of State to fill out the appropriate paperwork to officially announce their candidacies.

The qualifying period ends Friday.

QUALIFIERS:

U.S. Senator
Cary Deaton - Democratic Party
Charlie Melancon - Democratic Party
Anthony Gentile - Libertarian Party
David Vitter - Republican

U.S. Rep. Dist. 3
Hunt Downer - Republican Party
Jeff Landry - Republican Party

Lt. Governor
Jay Dardenne - Republican Party
Kevin Davis - Republican Party
Roger Villere - Republican Party

1st Circuit Court of Appeal Judge - 2nd Dist., Sub. 1, Div. A
Tim Kelley - Republican Party

1st Circuit Court of Appeal Judge - 2nd Dist., Sub. 2, Div. D
John Michael Guidry - Democratic Party

Potential candidates have until 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday and 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Friday to qualify.

The U.S. Senate and lieutenant governor races are expected to be highly contested.

The first primary election is scheduled for Aug. 28., the open primary is on Oct. 2 and the general election will be held on Nov. 2.
