NEW ORLEANS, LA (WAFB) - Former LSU football and baseball player, Chad Jones, was injured in a serious car crash Friday morning in New Orleans.

Jones suffered multiple fractures to his left leg, including shattering both his tibia and fibula, and had arteries and nerves exposed.  He didn't suffer any serious internal injuries and fortunately the main artery in his leg was not severed.  Jones was in surgery most of the day Friday. His father says the procedure was successful and the healing process can now begin.

Jones crashed his SUV near the Home Depot on Carrollton Avenue at Toulouse Street yesterday. It appeared as though the SUV was the only vehicle involved in the crash. According to WWL, he slammed into a streetcar pole.

Jones was taken by the New York Giants in the third round this year's NFL Draft. He just signed a contract with the team last week. The Milwaukee Brewers selected him in Round 50 of the MLB Draft, even though he did not play college baseball this past season.

Jones played safety on the LSU football team from 2007-2009, winning a national championship in 2007. For the Tigers baseball team, he won a championship in 2009 as a pitcher.
