HAMMOND, LA (WAFB) - A 22-year-old man is facing charges after accidentally shooting himself with a stolen handgun Monday morning.

According to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office, Jonvonte Day was trying to ride a bicycle and eat a biscuit at the same time when the gun in his pocket went off and shot him in the thigh around 8 a.m.

He was taken to an area hospital by a pair of bystanders. The gun was recovered by a responding deputy.

Later in the day, deputies were called to a home on General Ott Road, where a man reported a Glock .40 caliber pistol had been stolen from a car in front of his home.

Detectives were able to confirm the gun from the shooting earlier in the day was the one stolen.

When asked where he had gotten the gun, Day told investigators, "the street." He then stated he bought it on Tillman Park Road in Hammond.

Day will be charged with possession of stolen property.

The investigation is ongoing. More arrests and charges are possible.
