1979 oil spill worse than current spill in Gulf region

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The Deepwater Horizon platform oil spill may turn out to be the second worst spill from an oil platform in the Gulf region because some say it will never touch what happened in 1979.

In the Bay of Campeche that year, an exploratory well operated by the Mexican National Oil Company blew up and leaked for a full year. It would take the Louisiana oil leak two years to send as much oil into the Gulf as the Mexican well "Ixtoc One" did.

Ixtoc was fouling sandy white beaches of Texas up to a year after the blowup in 1979. The state of Texas kept cleaning and footing the bill when the Mexican National Oil Company would not. This was the last really catastrophic leak of an oil platform in 31 years.
