BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A vehicle owned by the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office was totaled and a deputy was injured when he crashed through an empty building Monday morning. The crash happened on Wooddale Boulevard in north Baton Rouge.
"I just wanted to know had anyone been hurt or whatever," said Linda Parker, a worker at All Tax, the business next to the building that was hit. "So, I found out no one [was], so glad about that and I'm just glad it's not this building."
Authorities said the deputy was driving fast, while responding to a fellow deputy's call when he was forced to swerve off the road to avoid hitting a man on a bike. The cruiser drove into an empty building and turned a few times before driving back out, trunk first. The sheriff's office said it's lucky things were not worse.
"He was coming down Wooddale," said Casey Hicks, spokesperson for the sheriff's office. "He tried to swerve to miss the man on the bike, he hit a building that was uninhabited, fortunately, but he was taken to the hospital for some broken bones and other minor injuries."
